is a Harvard University professor in the departments of History of Art and Architecture and Visual and Environmental Studies. She is the author of [Being Watched: Yvonne Rainer and the 1960s](https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/being-watched), the first book-length study of Rainer's influential performance career and an investigation of the intersection of visual art, dance, and media in the 1960s. Her article ["Make Believe: Parafiction and Plausibility"](http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/octo.2009.129.1.51) introduced the term parafiction to describe contemporary artist's tendency to make aesthetic experience a matter of shifting states of belief.
